The most important thing that you need to have for needlepoint is a needle. You have to have the right one so that you are able to do what you want to for the project that you are working on.  When you are doing needlepoint, you should think about the project that you are doing so that you have what you need to make the idea perfect. 

Tapestry needles are the most common needles that are used in needlepoint.  They are easily noticed and many people do not have any trouble finding them in the store. They have a large eye and reduce friction on the thread.  The tips are blunt and they will protect the canvas and thread from any needle damage. 

 Tapestry needles are available in sizes ranging from a fine tip to a larger sized one.  You have to remember that you are going to need to think about a few things first before you buy a needlepoint needle.  The finer the needle size means that the smaller the eye will be and it will not be long in length.  You should choose the larger size needle so that you can protect your thread and your canvas at the same time. 

It is important to pick the right size of needle.  You want to find one that is thin enough to pass through the material easily and not put holes in the canvas that you are using.  However you do not want your needle to be so thin that it falls through the hole that you are using. 

A good test is to drop the needle through a hole in the canvas and the needle should stop at the eye.  It can then be pulled through easier.  If your needle is too big, it will not pass through the canvas as easily as you would like it to.  Do not pull on it because this can cause damage to the canvas and this will distort your project. 

You can find the needles that you want in many of the craft stores in your area.  They are sometimes sold individually or in groups.  You can buy more than just one so that you have what you need for any project that you are making at the time.
