Hand quilting is a time honored and traditional craft but it is incredibly time consuming and takes a significant amount of special equipment. Of course, this equipment can easily be made at home. Hand quilting also takes a significant amount of patience.
How to begin hand quilting
There are a few things that you will need when getting into hand quilting. The first thing that you will need is a good idea of what exactly is involved in hand quilting. The first thing to do before even getting involved in quilting by hand is to check out a local quilting club that does hand quilting. This will give you an idea of what exactly is involved in the creation of each one of the blocks, how to put them together to make the quilt as well as the various options available for sewing. Remember that quilting by hand means that sewing machines are usually not used and are only employed in rare cases.
Once you know what is involved in quilting by hand, pick out the pattern that you want to create. Then pick out the type of fabric that you want to use, the type of batting, and thread. The next step is to determine the size of the quilting blocks. This will also determine the size of the pattern. It is a good idea to lay out the entire pattern before getting started.
It is also a good idea to label each block with a number that indicates its position on the quilt. Once that is taken care of, it is time to get started. It is important to remember not to work too quickly, especially if you are new to quilting and sewing. Simply work one block at a time based on the pattern.
Once all the blocks are completed simply, start sewing the pieces together. Then finally, when the pieces are together do any finish work that needs to be accomplished. There is a significant amount of satisfaction in completing a project of any size and quilts even small lap quilts are definitely projects that are note worthy when completed. It is important to pay attention to various techniques on starting and finishing stitches. Not matter if these stitches are in the actual design or in the combination stitches to put the blocks together. This is extremely important in any hand done needlecraft since it prevents the stitching from coming loose.
