Computers are everywhere lately. They can be used for almost anything. And now, with digitizing, you can use an automated embroidery machine to create your finished product. This will create a product in less time with a more finished appearance – and less work on your part when it comes to the actual stitching.

To do embroidery digitizing, there is some skill involved. First, you have to thoroughly understand how computerized embroidery machines work. You also have to understand all of the different characteristics in embroidery – from basic stitch types and lengths to which direction stitches should take. You will also need to know what code will do what in order to get the best looking results. As well as stitches, the digitizer also needs to understand how different fabrics and threads will affect the final product. The higher the skill of the digitizer means the better the product, so figure in lots of practice time until you learn the ropes. There are companies that can do this for you, however, it can get quite costly to do multiple projects.

Next, you will need to get all of your equipment. In this case, quality does matter! You will want the latest and best embroider digitizing software that you can afford to buy. Since technology is moving forward all the time the older software options are quickly outdated. The higher quality the machine that you use can make a huge difference as well. If you are new to digitizing and are not sure if it is for you, consider getting a refurbished machine to help cut your costs. Once you have gotten the hang of it and have decided that you want to continue on, then you can upgrade to a better machine to use for work.

You are probably wondering how all of this can affect your embroidery business. Look at it this way – digitizing creates a better-finished product. That means you can do more complicated and impressive designs, and get more money from your finished projects. Digitizing can also allow you to turn logos or personalized designs into patterns. This will allow your products to have a more personalized and customized look.

Digitizing is not without its problems, though. Especially if you are new to the art, it can cause a lot of headaches while you try to get the hang of it. Most digitizing problems can be broken down into three categories: using the wrong fabric, using the wrong design parameters, or using the wrong setup.

Unfortunately, not every design will work on every fabric. As you might imagine, embroidering on satin is quite different than embroidering on felt which is different than embroidering on linen. If you plan on using the same design on multiple fabrics, you may have to digitize each fabric separately. This can be quite costly if you are having someone do the digitizing for you, or quite time consuming if you are doing it yourself. Another option is to limit your work to only certain types of fabrics that can be switched without problems.

If you are using a pre-digitized design, it is crucial to stick with the original parameters, as these have been specifically configured for your project. Trying to change or resize parameters to suit your needs alters the very thing that is designed to make your project look its best. Changing anything may cause a change for the worse in your finished project.

Probably the most common error is in incorrect setup – either from lack of experience or just not paying attention to the details. You should be comfortable with push-pull, which is the small amount of shifting due to the force used while sewing. Thicker fabrics without much give will have less, while thinner fabrics with more give will have more. Other things that can affect it are the size of the stitch and the stitched area, density of the stitches, and the tension on your thread. You may constantly need to make adjustments while sewing to prevent distortion of your final image.

Still, even with potential problems, digitizing can give you a cleaner, more professional image. You may find it to be the boost that your embroidery business needs to take it to the next level.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words is a touchable sample worth? In short, for advertising it is priceless! If you are in the knitting or embroidery business, wearing your wares may be the perfect solution to you for finding new clients.

First of all, consider where you have been today. Maybe you ran errands. You stopped at the bank to get some cash. Then you went to the grocery store to get food for dinner tonight. On the way home you put gas in your car and picked up your allergy prescription at the drug store.

Everywhere you just went you were in contact with people. Those people can be your potential future customers. The clerk at the bank, the guy in line behind you at the store, the family in the car next to you at the gas station, and the pharmacist all saw you, plus countless other people. There is a good chance that they noticed what you are wearing. You can use this to your advantage to advertise, and there is not even a need to wear a sandwich board!

A crucial step to using yourself as an advertising medium is to be critical about how you look. Obviously, not everyone is a super model, but you can still give a neat and professional impression. Before going out, do a quick double take I the mirror. Is your hair neat and combed? If you wear makeup, is it neat and well done or do you need a touch up? What about your clothes? Are you still in the sweats that you wore to bed or have you made an effort to get dressed and looked nice? If you saw yourself at the store, would you feel comfortable enough to go up and say hello? Do not forget your most important fashion accessory either – your smile!

You are also going to have to take into consideration the products that you create. If you do baby blankets, you are going to look pretty silly walking around with a blanket draped over you and no baby. If you embroider T-shirts – the tiny little decal over the pocket might not be noticeable if you need to wear a jacket. Keep this in mind when choosing what items to wear. Always wear your best and most noticeable work out, and save the sloppy test projects for when you are bumming around the house.

You are also going to want to have some sort of script to use when talking to people. You do not want a canned speech that comes off as phony, but stuttering and saying “um” is not going to help either. If a friend or family member is able to help, consider practicing different scenarios at home to get comfortable with the idea. Remember this – if people are interested enough to ask you about an item that you have on, that makes them a potential customer. All you have to do is close the deal. Always have something with you that you can give to them as well, so after you have gone your separate ways they will have something to jog their memory. This can be a business card, a flyer, or a small catalog explaining your wares. All printed material should also include your name and contact information if they want to get a hold of you.

If, for practical reasons, you cannot wear your wares there may be other alternatives. For example, if you have no young babies at your home but enjoy knitting baby blankets, use them as gifts. When you attend a baby shower, bring the blanket as a gift and attach your card. Bring some extra cards too, just in case any of the other ladies at the shower want to order one for themselves or other friends. The same thing goes for other items as well. They can make great birthday, wedding, or congratulatory gifts. That way you can use your friends and family to help do your advertising for you.

With a little planning and some ingenuity, you can wear your wares and increase business all at the same time – without having to spend a fortune in advertising dollars.

For the experienced cross-stitch fanatic, the same old patterns that you can buy at the craft store may seem boring and out-dated. If you are looking for something newer and more exciting, consider trying photo cross-stitching. You can change favorite photos into beautiful works of art with some time and patience.

The most important thing to do is to pick a good photo for your project. Most everyone has boxes or albums full of old photos hiding somewhere in their home. Start by picking out photos that are clear and in good focus. Then pick out a picture that has good contrast between the subject and the background. For example, if you have a black cat sitting on your black sofa, it may be difficult to distinguish where your cat ends and the sofa begins. Choose a dark subject on a light background, or vice versa. You might also want to consider cropping the photo to get rid of unnecessary background images that make the image look cluttered. However, if you need to enlarge the photo to the size of your canvas, keep this in mind when you crop. It is essential to keep the same shape. For example, a 4-inch by 4-inch photo can be enlarged to an 8-inch by 8-inch photo, but not into an 8-inch by 10-inch. Using photo editing software can also soften your picture, making it look more like a painting, which can reduce some of the colors and make it easier to use for stitching purposes.

Next, you will need to decide how to transfer your photo onto a canvas. There are several different companies online that will do it for you for a small fee. However, if you plan on doing this more as a business venture than a hobby, it may be more prudent for you to buy the software to do it yourself at home. The programs translate pixels into cross-stitch. If you do it yourself at home, you will need to either use all digital media, or also have a scanner to upload pictures with. Either way that you go, the computer will print you up a chart of what to stitch. Some cleanup may be necessary to remove imperfections. Take into consideration the background as well – for example, if you have a dark background, consider using a dark canvas instead of stitching the whole thing.

Next you will have to gather all of your materials. If you plan on simply framing your completed stitches like a portrait, you will only need the basics: embroidery floss, needles, and canvas. If you plan on transferring your pattern onto something more personal, such as a shirt or a bag, you may need additional materials. If you are planning on stitching for others, you might want to look into buying your supplies in bulk to avoid frequent trips to the store. Remember that it is essential to keep things organized. If deciding to photo cross-stitch professionally, you may want to consider converting part of your home into a workspace or office. That way you can keep your projects organized without having them interfere with the rest of your life.

Now it is time to stitch! If you are doing stitching as a business, keep this in mind. You will more than likely have to set aside several hours a day to do nothing but stitch in order to get your orders out in a timely fashion. For those who stitch for the fun of it, you can stitch at your leisure. Make sure to always follow the pattern carefully for best results. Even small errors can cause distortions in the final product. Some things, like outlining parts of your canvas, can be done or left undone depending on the artistic style you are going for.

Once you are done, it is time to display your wares! You might take before and after shots (the original photo and the resulting cross-stitch) to display on your website or in flyers for prospective clients. Try stitching onto a shirt that you can wear around town to drum up new business. Use stitched photos as gifts to family and friends.

With a little planning and some work, you can change treasured family photos into fun and exciting gifts with photo cross-stitching!

Embroidery can be a great at-home business for those who enjoy it. It is relatively easy to set up, too. Here are some of the things to consider when setting up shop at home.

First, the most important thing to do is to find a space. Ideally, this will be a separate room of the house, but whatever you decide you want to have a private space that you can say “when I am in here, I am working”. You should be able to block out non-work distractions in some fashion. Make sure that your family and friends know that you are not to be disturbed when you are working unless it is an absolute emergency. The biggest downfall of working at home is that it is so easy to get distracted by other things.

In your space, you will want to set up your work area. This may include a desk, computer, and phone for taking and processing orders and billing. You will need some sort of storage system for all of your supplies. Organization is the key to keeping things running smoothly. A desk full of papers, knick-knacks and assorted junk is not conducive to running a business, nor is a closet so filled to the brim that you cannot find what you need. Find a filing system that works for you to keep track of receipts, invoices, client information, and tax forms. Visit a craft store, home-improvement store, or container store to get ideas of ways to organize craft supplies to make them easy to access.

In your workspace, you will also want a place to do your actual creating. The type of work that you do will dictate your needs. If you do your work on a sewing machine, you will need a place to set that up. If you do more things by hand, a comfortable chair to sit in may be a must. Adequate lighting is needed for all types of projects. This may require the addition of lamps or higher wattage bulbs in your area. You will also want to consider how you will store work-in-progress projects and items to be picked up or shipped so that they will not be disturbed when you are away. This is especially true if you have young children or pets in your home. You wouldn’t want to come back for the store to find chocolaty fingerprints or cat hair all over your newly completed project!

Do not forget that you are also going to need supplies for your projects! For embroidery, you are more than likely going to need a large variety of thread colors and needle sizes.  Not to mention scissors, hoops to keep projects together, several thimbles, and other sewing supplies.  Depending on the items you plan on embroidering, you may need a variety of other materials as well. If you are planning on embroidering T-shirts, for example, you will want to have a variety of sizes and maybe even colors on hand before you begin. Depending on your current collection, you may also need additional patterns or design ideas.

Next you will want to come up with a plan on how to run your business. Will you take orders over the phone or by email? Are you going to accept calls during all times of the day or only certain hours? Do you need a permit or license to sell items out of your home? You may want to contact your city hall to find out if any special permits are needed. Other things you might consider adding are: a separate bank account to use for expenditures and deposit payments to, business software to help you track sales and profits, a separate phone line with voicemail to use for phone orders, and a separate email account to use for internet orders.

You are also going to want to look into advertising opportunities to get your name out to public. This might include attending craft shows, wearing your embroidery around, or taking out ads in local newspapers or magazines. Researching costs of advertising ahead of time can allow you to add it into the budget when you are estimating start up costs.

With some planning and a few supplies, you can have your embroidery business up and running. Remember that organization and focus are essential, but also so is enjoying what you do.

Starting a new home business can be hard. In most things, there is often a lot of competition. Not to mention start up costs can be high. In the craft business, however, there are many options. If embroidery is your thing, there might be an alternative that you have not though of – personalized patches.

Patches are very versatile. Kids can use them to decorate jackets and back packs. Teams or clubs can use them to personalize uniforms. Business can use them to add permanent nametags for employees. They can come in a variety of size, colors, shapes, and graphics, so it is easy for customers to find the exact product that they are looking for. They can promote everything from favorite bands to favorite pets. Plus, since they are smaller in size than other projects, they can be completed quickly for fast turnaround times.

The materials for patches are simple. You will need: felt for backing (a light color will often work best), your design chart, waste canvas, embroidery floss in the appropriate colors, a needle that is strong and sharp enough to go through felt, and scissors for cutting. If you are planning on making several patches of the same design, remember to buy extra thread. Slight color differences may occur between dye lots that could affect the final product. An embroidery loom is helpful to keep your design from moving, but not essential.

To create patches, first you will need a design. Designs are available from a number of places – books, online, or craft store patterns. Or, if you are extra creative, you can design your own. A simple design will be easier to stitch for beginners, as you get used to the concept you can try more complicated ones. Choose colors that complement each other. For example, if your stitching subject is dark, choose a lighter background felt for more contrast.

Cut the felt in the shape that you want, only make it several inches larger. For example, if your finished patch is going to be 2 inches by 3 inches, cut your felt to be 4 inches by 6 inches or larger. This will make it easier to hold or use in an embroider loom, making it easier for you use. You will cut away the excess when you are finished.

Cut your canvas slightly larger than your design, but not quite as large as the piece of felt. Attach the two together by making anchor stitches in all corners, or along strategic points if you are not using a linear shape.

Keeping the fabric straight with the canvas, carefully stitch your design along the waste canvas grid. Make sure that you are going all the way through the felt to the other side. Upon completion, cut the sides of the canvas and pull out canvas threads. Be very careful not to cut the threads you stitched in! When you have finished removing the canvas your design should remain stitched directly onto the felt. The felt can then be trimmed along the edges of the design, leaving only a small amount all the way around. It essential that you use caution when doing this. You do not want to cut any of your stitched areas and cause the project to unravel. The patch is now ready to be sewn onto whatever you would like!

When creating patches to sell, you may find it helpful to stick to a few designs, and just use personalization items such as adding a name to them. This can allow you to stitch designs in your spare time and add embellishments as needed. Or you can allow clients to submit their own designs and create an individualized patch each time.

Advertising patches is easy to do too – they are so portable! Patches can be attached to anything that can be sewn, so you can take them with you everywhere. Consider attaching patches to jackets, bags, jeans, etc. so that you can show them off. Remember to take business cards with you as well so that you can hand them out to interested shoppers.

Patches may be just the answer you were looking for when searching for the perfect embroidery business. With some supplies and some creativity, you can have a booming business up in no time.

If you are looking to get into the embroidery business but are unsure where to start, monogramming may be for you. Almost anything can be monogrammed – from hand towels to baseball caps to sports jackets. Plus monogramming has a variety of uses in everything from making business uniforms to personalized baby gifts.

One of the first things to decide is what you would like to monogram. Though it is tempting to try and do everything at once, you will quickly go broke trying to purchase all the supplies that you will need. You should decide whether you want to be into personal monogramming single items, or monogramming in bulk for companies. You may also want to decide what you will do monogramming on – will the client provide their own items, or will you have stock items that you use?

Monogramming can be done on a variety of products; so do not limit yourself to T-shirts and hand towels. If you are going to be designing your own products, choose something that is of interest to you. Got a toy poodle? Consider monogramming dog beds, sweaters, collars, or toys for that personalized look. Are you into home décor? Consider monogramming pillowcases and sheet sets to market towards wedding shower gifts. Do you have a baby? Consider monogramming fun items like bibs or T-shirts, or even keepsake items. The opportunities are limited only by your imagination.

The next thing to do is to get all of the equipment you need. Depending on the amount of work you plan on doing will affect the type of machine that you get. There are large, heavy-duty ones for commercial use or smaller, lighter-weight ones for personal use. They can hold a variety of spools of thread – another thing that you will want to stock up on in many assorted colors. If your machine is not pre-programmed with monogram designs, you may need to purchase some patterns. You can also purchase computer software that will allow you to turn logos or personal designs into patterns for the machine. If you plan on providing the items that will be monogrammed, you will need to find a way to order those in bulk and have on hand as well.

With so many different supplies and projects going on at once, it is crucial to keep everything organized. Consider setting aside a room or portion of your home to use as an office and workspace.

Next you will want to decide how to advertise your wares. Depending on the type of monogramming you are doing, this can be achieved a variety of ways. You can place ads in newspapers and craft magazines. You can attend craft fairs. You can give monogrammed items as gifts to friends and family. Or you can wear your items around town for everyone to see. How you decide to advertise is up to you.

Once you have generated some interest in your product, you will need to come up with a way to efficiently process and fill orders. For someone who is new to working at home, it may be easy to get distracted and overwhelmed. Remember that organization is the key to success. Create yourself a workspace. Ideally, this would be a separate room in your home where you can literally shut yourself away from everyone. You will want to keep everything to do with your business there. Organize your thread and other materials in a system that can make it easy to find and notice when you are running low on an item. You might consider getting a computer program that can help you track incoming and outgoing orders, expenditures and earnings, and client information. You might also consider getting a separate phone line or email address so that you never miss an order.

Next it is time to create! Remember, when you are working for a project it is essential to stay on task. As business gets going, you may need to complete several monograms in a set amount of time. Take care when scheduling your time so that you have adequate time to complete all projects.

Monogramming can be a fun and inventive way to create unique designs for customers. You may just find that it is the embroidery business that you were looking for.

Creating your own knitting and embroidery website can provide you with an extra part time income if you set it up right. If you are already an experience craft artist who has received rave reviews for your work, you will have a head start over others, and you can display your work on your site, and make money doing so. If you do not know how you can take advantage of all the resources available to you to help you learn how.

The way in which you can make money setting up a knitting and embroidery website would be to display descriptions, photos, and prices of your product line. Not only that, but you can also offer e-mail craft classes, and post dates of upcoming craft shows where people can meet you in person. Not only that, but you can make money off of other craft sale advertisers by placing their ads on your site.

The first step in deciding to create a knitting and embroidery craft website would be to find a reasonably priced basic web hosting service. Then, you would examine the tools that this host gives you, and learn how to use them. For beginners website creators, you have tutorials and easy site builders to help you create your site right online. For more advanced users, you have access to creating HTML website templates, uploading your web pages by way of an FTP client and so on.

The more you can spend on your website, the better quality website you would be able to publish. However, it is not necessary to always spend hundreds of dollars a month in order to have a fully functional site. A basic five-page site could cost you only approximately 5 to 10 dollars a month, and an unlimited pages website you can create for as little as 20 dollars a month. Not only that, but you can sign up for a free auction listing account, and post items for bid. The listing fees at most reputable auction sites cost little to nothing, and is a great form of exposure for your online crafting business.

You can also find reasonably priced e-commerce website hosting with all the functions that you need already designed for you. This would run you about 50 to 100 dollars a month. Either that or if you just want to purchase a website template already made, you can find free ones to download and use for your site as well, and you can purchase a custom designed one for as cheap as 50 dollars. With all the options open to you it is not at all impossible for you to find a web-hosting plan that you can afford.

If you are planning on making money off of advertising when you create your site, you will want to offer free informative crafting articles for free on your site. You can also set up an e-mail list of subscribers who will want to keep updated with the latest crafting tips. You can send them free information by way of e-mail, which they will find useful, and will cause them to more likely remember your site and to visit more often. Additionally, those who frequent your websites more than others usually will buy from you.

You can create a website for any craft you choose, including for an embroidery and knitting site. The last step in creating your website would be to broadcast it and promote it across the web. In order to determine which advertisement will work best for your site you can research the Web with the key words “Internet advertising” or similar phrase. You can also search for specific types of advertising options on the Internet as well.

For example, you may want to learn more about what is called search marketing, or pay per click ads. These are ways to market by key words in your website content, as well as by purchasing ads related to certain keywords which appear on search result pages. If you pick the right key words your ads can appear at the first page of search engine results, and you may be able to corner a market with little or no competition. Cornering smaller markets that people do not yet know that much about are how many successful business people start out-even when selling crafts.

Keeping costs low is a key tenet in any successful business these days. Any method necessary, as long as it is a legal and legitimate business solution, is generally accepted as a way of trimming overhead costs. By keeping costs low, you can maximize your profits and use them to further expand your business. There are different many tried and true ways of trimming overhead costs. These include practices such as buying materials wholesale, buying from value stores where prices will typically be lower, working from home as opposed to operating out of a leased office space, doing all work yourself as opposed to hiring and paying a staff, and depending on who you are doing the work for, having the customer purchase the materials for you to do the work with.

Buying wholesale is an accepted practice in virtually any industry. Knitting and embroidering is no exception. Buying materials in large quantity, or in bulk, is a very economical decision, as individual item prices will be lower and materials will be in abundance. This provides many more benefits than are directly observable. The chance of a material shortage will be diminished and tremendous amounts of money will be saved, especially in the long run.

An alternative to buying wholesale merchandise is to buy from a discount or value store. This is a useful alternative to buying large amounts of materials when only a small amount will be needed for the task at hand. Value stores typically offer a no-frills approach to shopping; therefore they are able to pass on these savings to the consumer. Items are sold with little to no mark-up, making materials such as beads, knitting needles, glue guns, fabric and yarn much more affordable, therefore much more economical for your business.

Paying wages is a quick way to diminish profits, but profit diminishment is never the aim of a successful business. The key to avoiding the payment of wages is simply not to have any employees. Doing the work yourself can be a tedious undertaking but if cutting cost is your goal, this is your solution. The profits will trickle down to only you and these profits will be your wages. Without having to pay for the services of another worker, you will have maximized your profit by 100%. You now do not have to share your earnings with anyone else. However, considering the aspect of time value, you will only be profiting in dollars, not in time spent.

In the same vein as doing the work for yourself comes the next tip: work from home. As mentioned before, overhead includes such things as paying your employees. Along with this expenditure comes the bill for the office space you may choose to lease. If the work can be done from home and sold from home without sacrificing professionalism or credibility for your business then by all means do it this way. The savings from not having to pay rent for an office space can really add up to great amounts. If all of the aforementioned tips are utilized, there will be little to no overhead cost and the profits will really add up quickly.

Certain customers that you work with might not have a problem paying for their own materials. Whenever you can work out these kinds of deals with your customers, then the cost of doing the knitting and embroidering is absolutely zero. Whatever you make from the sale of the product or service is purely profit. This money is yours to do whatever you would like to do with it. It might be difficult to convince customers to purchase their own materials. If you can find some way to show them the benefits that they receive from purchasing their own materials, then the task becomes easier. It will be easier to talk with customers that you know well about this kind of business proposition as new customers will shy away from the thought of having to purchase the materials then pay for the service.

It isn’t difficult lower the costs that are associated with knitting and embroidering. It will take a little more work than you might be used to, but the increase in profits is certainly worth it.
